Greg, Jack did indeed wear a toupee for his film appearances, both at Paramount and at Warner Bros. He did not wear it on his television program. In THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT there are a couple of moments where the divot almost flies off during the rooftop finale. I don't know the code for posting images here (tried it once - failed miserably) but here's a link to a side-by-side I did:

Thanks Greg and Tom. That's terrific. My kids and I have loved Jack Benny for years. I used to get cds of his radio show and DVDs of his TV show from the library. We were delighted when we became XM radio listeners a few years ago to find him (and others) regularly on the radio. By the way, my kids are now 13 and 15, your typical American teens with sports, Xbox, Ipods and all, but they still love that old time radio!

Speaking of Benny, Loved listening to Fred Allen's TOWN HALL TONIGHT and "The House That Jack Built". I've heard very few of those 30's Allen shows. John Brown, Charlie Cantor and Alan Reed were all great. I wonder if Reed was still going by "Teddy Bergman" at that point (since there were no cast announcements by Mr. Barouch). And my favorites, The Merry Macs.

I must say that the new XM Classics episodes lately have been exceptional disc-to-tape transfers, especially the usually thin-sounding SHADOW and the 30's LUX RADIO THEATER shows.

Those videos are great! I had wondered what it was like to do the show in front of an audience.

I once attended a recording of one episode of the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre in New York circa 1979. The actors sat around a large table, read through the show once as a rehearsal, then made the real recording. The audience was one (me). It was a real treat to meet the actors I had listened to for hours at night with the lights off! The sound effects guy was fantastic, creating most sounds with physical objects. Greg, you NEED to get that show on 164. Can you give us listeners an address to write to, to petition the responsible people to let you acquire rebroadcast rights?

After watching the first clip, I began watching the other Jack Benny especially the ones with Mel Blanc. I didn't realize how funny he was. Of course the voices were spectacular, but his comedy was also great. Thanks Tom for the clips, without that I would have missed some GREAT comedy.

I'm a HUGE Jack Benny fan and have passed this on to my three boys (10, 9, and 7). They get a kick out of knowing that Phil is Baloo in Disney's The Jungle Book, and of course that Mel Blanc was the many voices on the Looney Tunes. If you all get a chance, you really must read his daughter's book which has a lot of exerpts from a manuscript she found as he apparently was writing an auto biography of his life and his career. One funny tidbit was how "Rochester" got his raspy voice....apparently as a boy he sold newspapers on the street. And with the competition of other boys in the area, he had to let his voice stand out, so he yelled to get people's attention...thus permantly straining his vocal cords. Who would've thought that would've made him so unique in this entertainment business!
Thanks so much Greg, for sharing this clips. I have an original movie poster hanging in my livingroom of Jack Benny in one of his movies called "The Meanest Man in the World"....so totally against the truth, huh?

I am not much of a guy who thinks in so deeply about web design but I think your post had some valid points in it. Like designers are forced to design stuff within the limited code available and not go beyond it, their innovation is somewhat limited but still I think Web Design won't die! I agree that Amazon and other some big sites won't have a blog but now a days it's very important to have some sort of option available so people can quickly communicate their thoughts. I think Amazon if wants to shift it to that, they can get a customized CMS for themselves.
