Hitchcock on Radio and The US of A's 232nd Birthday. She doesn't look a day over 201!

First folks a little "housekeeping"; I appreciate all the emails you are sending to the blog site, keep 'em coming, but FYI for unknown reasons I when I respond to some of you folks I get a failed to be delivered message. It does not occur very often, but I want to let you all know that I answer every email sent to me, so if you haven't heard from me within a couple of days please try again, or better yet email me at the XM site radioclassics@xmradio.com  (That's if you fail to hear from me here).

Okay, Christmas In July voting was quite intense, but friendly. Between all the comments and the numerous email votes, it appears that continuing the tradition wins the vote by roughly 2/3rds to 1/3rd. Ah but this is the nation of compromise, right? So here's what I will likely do; the weekly long Christmas In July celebration will be broadcast from Monday July 14th to Sunday July 20th but it won't be wall to wall nothing buy Christmas OTR shows. About 1/3 of the 2 hour blocks will be traditional fare.

Once the printable schedule is posted, you can see how they rotate as the Christmas themed shows will be highlighted in blue. RadioClassics Grid 2008-07-14 Christmas In July etal.xls (27.00 kb) This is a tentative schedule. I have a number of Christmas series that have not been broadcast on the channel before and the others have not played for more than one year (meaning they were not part of last Christmas In July or broadcast last December).

Now on to this week's shows;

We have an hour long radio version of Alfred Hitchcock's thriller motion picture Strangers On A Train. Filling in for big screen leads Farley Granger and Robert Walker are Ray Milland and Frank Lovejoy. It debuts today (Monday) at Noon ET and repeats this evening at 8pm ET.

             Ray Milland                       Frank Lovejoy

To mark this Friday Independence Day celebration here in "The States" (my Canadian listeners are free to join in if they like :) ) we are bringing back Yankee Doodle Dandy starring James Cagney as presented on The Screen Guild Players. That is followed by Bette Davis in The Cavalcade of America episode An American Is Born.

It runs all week but I'll highlight Friday's broadcasts; Noon ET and again at 8pm on The Fourth of July.   Greg.

I don't like the change you're making with Christmas in July, but I can't complain too much. I love all the shows, Christmas or no Christmas. The "Strangers on a Train" show is outstanding. I noticed Bill Conrad in that one. Do we have any idea how many shows he appeared in during his career? Also, I see where the first season of "Cannon" is out on DVD. Keep the radio shows coming.

Now that I see a picture of Frank Lovejoy, I now recognize him from many films. The last one I saw with him was Strategic Air Command with James Stewart. It is really awesome seeing the faces of the voices we here. I also agree with Frank. I understand why you want to break up the 2 hour block with 1 episode of regular programing, but I wish that on, lets say a Saturday, you play a full day of Christmas Shows. It is not easy trying to please everyone, but your doing a great job. I hope you have a great 4th of July Greg, and I wish the OTR family the same.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

Not sure if you know this already, but for some reason, all your posts show up double on Google Reader. Just a heads up.

About Christmas in July, I am in the 2/3 that wants the whole week, but I understand the need for compromise. Keep up the good work.

Happy Belated Birthday Greg, and thank you for feeding my avaricious appetite for absolutely wonderful radio show classics you play. Where in the world do you find them? Is that why you live in D.C.?

I think that mixing non-Christmas shows with the Christmas episodes during Christmas in July week
is a great compromise.

I think the Christmas in July schedule looks great. I listen so often that when you run all Christmas I usually ended up listening to a show more than once in the week. Adding the non Christmas shows will help break it up a bit.

Loved hearing one of my favorite Benny shows this morning - the Air Cadets visiting Jack and "Babs" Stanwyck. In addition to Peter Lind Hayes, who was discussed after the show, the other Cadet was Bill Orr. Bill Orr was an actor on the Warner lot who joined the Air Corp's motion picture unit and, in 1945, married Jack L. Warner's daughter (actually stepdaughter) Joy Page. Orr went on to head Warner Bros.' television unit. One of the stars of that unit, James Garner, complained incessantly about the way the actors were treated. Garner got even when he made SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERRIF! The opening shot of the town shows the exterior of a house of ill-repute with a huge sign - MADAME ORR'S HOUSE.

Another thing that has always puzzled me about the Benny/Babs show is this - who played Judge Hooper in the "SALLY SUTTON" soap opera that is heard. It sounds very, very much like Harry Von Zell, who essayed a similar role and voice in DICK TRACY IN Bb. I wonder if Von Zell made an unbilled cameo - the Judge gets a very big laugh when he starts speaking!

By jove, you certainly are!

Thanks for the compromise xmas in July schedule. Really appreciate the relief as the wall-to-wall is a bit hard to take.

Any chance you can present some information on the amazing music accompaniments and sound effects that make each show, in its own unique way, a tour de force?

Thanks.

I am trying to find out why you don't play any Amos and Andy shows on the programs. Is it a PC move on your part? I loved their shows as a kid. I would love to hear them again. As I am sure many would.

Thanks,
Jude

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
