Downtown Waukegan, Illinois

My mother and her friend recently visited Jack Benny's hometown and took a couple of photos for all of us.

There also is a Jack Benny Center for the Performing Arts and a Jack Benny Middle School located in Waukegan, a suburb of Chicago.

My Hubby and I live in Chicago and I hate to admit we have never seen the statue, but will make a pilgrimage up there for sure. Jack Benny is our favorite comedian on radio and television. His humor is timeless.

WOW thank your Mother and her friend for us. Very nice statue of the funny man. It's a good mother who thinks of her son's job while on vacation, LOL.

Greg,

Pass along our thanks to your mom for sharing that with us all.

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for starting my week out right. Yesterday morning was looking to be a particularly Monday sort of Monday morning, especially with the added bonus of hustling unwilling kids off for the first day of school. But when I turned on XM 164 and heard the opening lines of "The Six Shooter" starting up, things instantly improved. Listening to two of my favorites (Jimmy Stewart, plus Conrad's "Gunsmoke") on Radio Classics during the hour-long drive in to work actually had me in a pretty good mood by the time I got there.

Of course, Monday set in again within minutes after walking in the office door, but at least the day started out pretty darn good!

Thanks,
Kyle

Greg: In referance to The Jack Benny Show I was wondering if they made any special comment on the show when Dennis Day left for the Navy and when he came back? Also wasn't Dennis the actor in the Francis the Talking Mule movies who spoke with Francis? Also is it possible now with the merger you will have more of the different shows so you can go longer than a year without repeating everthing. I really enjoyed Old Time Radio the first year I had XM Radio I just don't enjoy paying to hear the same thing over and over again so I will probally close my account.

There's a Jack Benny middle school in Waukeegan. Their sports nickname is the 39ers! Pretty cool.

I had no idea there was a statue to Jack. He deserves it.
Thanks to your mom for letting us all experience this vicarious visit.
I do like the later Jack Benny programs better than the early ones. When he first started out in the late thirties and early forties, he was rather abrasive, talked too fast, and was quite harsh in his humor..and he sometimes treated Rochester with a bit of disdain. But through the years, he developed
his image and repetitive humor (i.e.going down into the vault, driving the Maxwell, encountering the
"Hey, Bud" guy, etc) and he has no equal in the field of comedy.

I love Jack Benny and I'm glad his hometown appreciates him so much. While on the air, Jack was "dating" Mary Livingston but in real life, they were happily married and stayed that way until he died of pancreatic cancer 12/26/74. If any of you haven't done so yet, and if you can find it (try Amazon.com), I urge you to read "Sunday Nights at 7 - I believe that's the title - by his daughter Joan. It's a terrific read and you learn so much about Mr. Benny, the era and the gang. I'm dying to read the newer bio, titled (again, I believe) "Well!" ... or is it "Cut That Out!"? If you've read the newer bio, I'm curious to know what you think of it.
And thanks to Greg and XM164, we get to hear all these great shows plus all the other comedies, mysteries, detective shows, sci-fi, etc., every day. Even the shows I don't like are good --- and that's saying something. XM164 and Greg are real blessings!
