08-19-08 This morning I was on my way to work listening to The Falcon with Les Damon. Approsimately 8 minutes into the program, There was a break in the action and I began to wonder of I wasn't listening to Johnny Dollar instead. I did a double take on the name and it was the Falcon. This episode was the Case of the King of Hearts. What I heard was the break music to Johnny Dollar. It is very distinct in its tenor so, that was why the double take. Check it out. I wonder if it wasn't on the same radio station back then and if that Music was used on this episode prior to being used on the Johnny Dollar episodes for the duration. Just a curiosity...

If I were on a deserted island and could carry only one--just one--old radio show,it would be this weeks "The English Butler" on Jack Benny's Show. If you have never heard this show I beg you to please listen. The writing on this show is beyond belief. Ronald and Benita Colman have perfect timing that greatly compliments the Benny ensemble. Eddie Anderson as Rochester is perfect, as usual. Thank you, Greg, for airing my favorite show of all time, "The English Butler".

I have 3 XM radios, car, home, and on the go and they are tuned to 164 most of the time. Because of my age (68)many are ones that I heard as a kid long before TV. My kids, both in their 40's, love listening. As soon as the dust settles on the merger my son will be adding XM? or whatever to his auto. Keep up the good work and by all means keep them coming.

I also love The Third Man. Turner Classic Movies just ran the movie this weekend and got me to wondering how many episodes the radio show ran into? I know it ran from 1951 to 1952 but I can't seem to find a collection of all the shows to purchase for my own library.

On a side note, it's obvious from all the posts that all the 164 listeners are as loyal as I am. So, I have to ask...who else among us is as outraged as I am about these proposed preemptions?! Bet they wouldn't do this to Oprah's channel. I think we have to speak up so that our channel (as well as our loyalty) is not taken for granted as a "spare" channel for whenever XM decides to add extra college football games. Does anyone else agree with me?

Margo, I do not think that 164 will ever be sidelined for a few hours for a sporting event. They have many channels dedicated for that sort of thing. Do not fear Margo....After all The Shadow is always watching AND Listening.

Margo,

What proposals are you referring to? I have heard nothing to the effect that 164 will suffer the fate that Sonic Theatre has (163). Am I missing something?

For anyone who hasn't seen this message yet, the home page for 164 has this message posted when you click on "Channel Preemptions Possible This Fall"

Channel Preemptions Possible This Fall

"Beginning August 30th and throughout the fall, XM may preempt XM Radio Classics' regularly scheduled programming to air select college football games on Saturdays during the College Football season. XM apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and will make every attempt to minimize these occurrences. For a weekly schedule of preemptions please visit our website at www.xmradio.com/preemption/index.xmc or send us an e-mail at TalkProgramming@xmradio.com"

I think an email campaign is in order to let them know we don't appreciate being shoved aside for football. We pay for this channel and this channel is what we should get for our money. I'm not a militant...I'm just a loyal fan who would be lost without my 164.

Thank you for the Link my dear Margo, but this is what I see. The channels mentioned are the following: The Weather Channel - XM 125, America Right - XM 166, America Left - XM 167, and The Power - XM 169.
I see no mention of Radio Classics 164. Did you see it mentioned somewere else? Please tell the Shadow so that he may alter the minds of The XM Exec's.

Hi Bill,

Here's the page you want to be on to see the message:

http://www.xmradio.com/onxm/channelpage.xmc?ch=164

The message on this page clearly states, and has been confirmed by Greg himself, that:

"...XM may preempt XM Radio Classics' regularly scheduled programming to air select college football games..."

XM couldn't have made it any clearer than that. It may well Siriusly affect our programming.

Margo, nowhere on this page does it say 164 will be preempted. Until I see a posting from Greg himself I will stand by my earlier comments. This Page http://www.xmradio.com/pdf/preemption.pdf has the channels that will be affected and 164 is not on it....Lights Out

Okay folks,

There is a informational promo running on 164 that indicated Radio Classics is on a possible pre-emption list for college sports. There is also a paragraph about it on www.radioclassics.xmradio.com I hope you all understand that I can't tell you much more than that. I personally hope that the channel will not be taken down and the fact that it is not on that page Bill linked to has me a little less worried about it. If it does come to it, my understanding is that it would be very rare and directly connected to a time when there are multiple sports playing all at one time. Which would only be for a few hours on a Saturday when there is college football and at the same time baseball, hockey, etc.

As indicated in the promo; please direct your comments to the following address TalkProgramming@xmradio.com

Greg.

Just returned from a 2,000 mile road trip to the midwest and back, listening to 164 much of the way in both directions. It kept both my sweetie and I amused and enetertained through the long stretches of I-90 in the middle of the night.

While on vacation I read this: www.amazon.com/.../0743201957- Two O'Clock Eastern Wartime, by John Dunning, who is an old time radio afficianado and a great writer. It's a mystery novel set in the world of 1940s radio and features tons of interesting trivia and background on life at a major radio station in the 1940s. Great read for all lovers of classic radio, highly recommended!

They must have updated the preemption.pdf file since Bill checked it, since it now lists Radio Classics as being preempted Saturday night from 7pm-Midnight (Eastern Time). Unfortunately, from the XM Executives' point of view we're an obvious choice for preemption since by Saturday all our programming has already been broadcast two or three time previously in the week. They probably assume, not without reason, that by Saturday night most of Radio Classics' listeners have already heard the episodes being preempted.

So I doubt we can talk XM out of preempting the channel. However, I was thinking that maybe we could find some compromise. Maybe for those five hours they could add Radio Classics to the XMRO internet stream. I don't believe we're currently on there; perhaps Greg knows if that is for purely business reasons or if there are legal/copyright reasons that prevent XM from currently streaming the channel.

Pre-emption update!

Yes, Jonathan is correct as I learned this morning. Radio Classics will be preempted from 7pm to Midnight ET this Saturday evening due to sports programming. During that time, on 164, you will hear only a repeating recorded announcement telling you so, the college football games themselves will be heard elsewhere. It is all about freeing up bandwidth and since were are in the non-conference portion of the season more games are being played at the same time.

I have been told to be prepared for it to occur for the next few Saturdays.

As to putting it online, I wish we could but right now due to those legal/copyright issues were are unable put it there. I hope the newly merged company and our content provider can fix that in the future and then pre-emptions will not be as painful because the online version would still play.

For all of you with Innos, MyFis and other recordable XM Radios, this would be a good time to get them up and running. As Jonathan indicated in his comment, by Saturday night the shows have already played multiple times so if you can record them in advance, you might want to do so.

I am sorry about this and if I had known for sure earlier I would have let you all know.

Greg.
