Here We Go Again

As I sit here at home, the second preemption of Radio Classics (in order to use the audio bandwidth of the channel) is about to begin. As I stated last week, this is a decision out of my control, but I do apologize for it nonetheless.

To clarify; you will not hear a college football game on 164 itself, but rather only a low bandwidth preemption announcement. This is because 164 is not being taken over to play sports, just most of the audio bandwidth is being "borrowed" in order to have enough to cover all the sporting events happening at the same time this Saturday evening. It will return at Midnight ET (11pm CT, 10pm MT, 9pm PT).

Remember any of you who would like to comment about this decision please send emails to TalkProgramming@xmradio.com I tell you this not to "pass the buck" and save myself from angry emails but rather to make sure the people at XM who decided this preemption was necessary receive the emails and not me.

In anticipation of a second Saturday evening (into early Sunday for me) flood of emails to this blog as well as the Radio Classics page (I am the only one who sees and answers them); I want to apologize in advance for anyone I do not get back to personally. I just didn't have enough time last week to answer all of them.

I suppose that is good news, right?! It means, not only does 164 have a very large audience but also a very loyal and protective one!

I thank all of you for that.

Greg.

dang straight we're loyal. Wink just find it aggravating that they'll give artists their own channels.. most of whom really don't deserve more than a couple of days of play time, but wanna snatch bandwidth from one of the few channels that really make this whole satellite radio thing worth the experience? anyway Greg, keep up the good work. I've been glad to hear that you are not only adding new episodes to the line up, but new programs as well. I have no idea how you manage to juggle not only hosting, but doing the lineup as well. It has to be a true work of love. also, i read a while back where someone said you shouldn't waste so much time on the backgrounds of the people involved. for me, that is one of the really great things that you do. it's always great to hear what they did later in life, and even to hear that some of them are still around. how about the possibility of interviewing some of them at sometime?

I'm better prepared this week than last for the preemption (but I still sent another email ... to be repeated every week 164 goes down). But I have a bandwidth question.

XM obviously has more programming than satellite bankwidth. How about Sirius? Do they have the same problem, or do they have excess bandwidth that would reduce the problem when the merger is complete?

Also, Sirius has its own old time radio show. Will both survive or will one get dumped in the merger?

Why doesn't 165 get preempted? I like Art Bell and George Noory but I think that "Somewhere in Time" crap that plays all night on Saturday night is just stupid. Do we really need to know what Art was talking about in 1996?

I agree with the other comments. I am a loyal listener 164 and love to hear Greg. I listen everyday. Since I discovered old time Radio a couple of years ago. On Saturday nights I look forward to listening an am saddened that the past couple of Saturday nights have been quiet around my house. I will continue to send more as needed. Greg don't stop what you are doing I support you all the way. Old Time Radio is my favorite xm channel.

I too am a loyal listener to this channel. Greg, I just wanted you to know your channel was a wonderful way to pass our days during Hurricane Gustav. Will no power for four days we burned up many batteries in our home unit, but listening to the wonderful old shows by kerosene lamp was the most fun we had thru this ordeal. It felt like a trip back in time. We finally have lights and air conditioning again, thank goodness. Some modern life is very welcome but we still are listening just not sweltering in the heat! I had send my email when the preempted the first week and I hope they are done with this interruption to my favorite channel. I agree with the others who say there are so many music channels why not choose one of those from now on.

Greetings Greg,

I too sent in my email to the yokels who decided to take away our favorite site on XM, even only for a few hours. I'm just dumbfounded that Opie and Anthony can spew their junk and obscure music sites play on while the most historical and authentic site in the XM lineup gets bumped for football and such. Bah, Humbug! Keep up the great job you are doing and we'll be listening.

Greg,
I just wanted to say thanks for all that you do to make my XM radio worth listening to and you can be sure I gave the XM Staff a piece of my mind on this preemption. I personally wish they'd preempt Oprah and her loony spiritualist friends if they are going to preempt any channel at all.
Besides, haven't we enough channels dedicated to the concept of numbskulls and druggies chasing each other around a field for a piece of pigskin?

Thank you, Greg, for explaining the technical end of the Great College Football-164 Radio Classics caper. I didn't understand why we were getting the same message rather than an actual game. As I've said, I'm willing to sacrifice (offer up) an afternoon or an evening of my favorite shows for football (especially if one of the games either featured NAVY or was the army-NAVY football classic). But to get that msg over and over again was annoying. Now that I know why, I'll either turn the radio off and watch TV or I'll turn on AM or classical music radio until MY station returns.

Greetings everyone. Greg, I just heard the Suspense episode with Orsen Welles. What a great show. Orsen Welles was way before his time. I am also looking forward to listening to Destry Rides again with Jimmy Stewart and the 2 hour block of westerns you have programmed. I was listening to Sirus's OTR channel (118) yesterday while driving my boss’s car in for service. All I have to say is how lucky we are that you host XM's OTR. You are so informative, while theirs is dull and boring. We all must look for the silver lining in this cloud the will eventually go away. Greg, this weekend instead of replying to all those angry e-mail’s. How about taking your family to a movie. You deserve it.

I too sent XM an email. I told this it is highly disappointing that they take the one and only Radio Classics channel and snatch it for a silly football game! Argh!! I think they should instead preempt a music channel! I have had XM Radio now for almost three years and my radio is ALWAYS on XM164! I too like how Greg gives trivia and tidbits about the shows and actors. It really makes it fun. Keep up the good work Greg!
