New Schedule, And Yes, Another Preemption

by gregbell 9/2/2008 10:42:00 AM

It was quite a tough weekend, a sleepless one as I responded, as much as possible, to the mass of emails from the understandably upset listeners. I wish I could tell you that was the one and only preemption, but I never lie to you and don't plan to start doing so. Radio Classics 164 is scheduled for at least one more Saturday night preemption. The reasons why are detailed in my previous post.

I hope it will not continue beyond this Saturday and I am cautiously optimistic that will be the case, but I have not been told for sure. I will tell all of you as soon as I know.

So here is an updated schedule for this current week RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-01 Wk-Landscape.xls (28.50 kb)

And here is next week's schedule, which does not reflect any preemptions because I have not been told there will be any. I am trying to be positive.

RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-08 Wk-Landscape.xls (26.50 kb)

If I am later told about any additional preemptions, I will let you know.

 Greg.

In the grand scheme of things, giving up 164 a couple of Sat nights per year is probably tolerable. What I would really like to see happen is a transfer of several channels of bandwidth away from the music catgory (Do we really need and does anyone really listen to "Fred" or Ethy" or God know what else??) and create several OTR channels. A Westerns channel, Mysteries channel, Comedies Channel, Detectives Channel and a Variety Channel.

Given Greg's comment that ch 164 is very high in the ratings, I think it may make sense, as the popularity of OTR is starting to grow again it should make business sense as well.

I agree with Jeff .. I would also love more than one OTR channel.. BUT while giving up our bandwidth is really insignificant in the scheme of things.. I just don't like that they did it to our channel...

as much as i hated the interruption of my favorite channel, i must say that during shows that i have listened to more than once, i do switch to fred as an alternative. so i disagree with you on that point jeff. but even worse than the otr interruption was the weather channel being put on hold. as a trucker i have to keep abreast of the weather situation to plan my routing and that interruption came during the evac of new orleans due to the hurricane.don't get me wrong otr is still my fav but i need information as much as i need entertainment. so they just need to get rid of the sports features on xm.

Here's my take on the preemption issue...

First of all, Radio Classics is the MAIN reason that I signed up for XM Radio in the first place and it's extremely annoying to turn on my radio and hear that the programming has been preempted..whether it's for 5 minutes or 5 days.

Secondly, if XM wants to broadcast special sporting events why not put them on another channel? I can bet that if they preempted the preview channel there would be NO complaints about that!!

And finally...like everyone else, I pay to have XM Radio and I don't appreciate paying for a recorded announcement playing over and over again on my favorite channel!

Ok I'm climbing down from my soapbox now! Smile

I also subscribe to XM Radio specifically for OTR and am very upset about the preemption for sports. I have already sent an e-mail to the TalkProgramming@xmradio.com address. I hope everyone is sending it to them as well and not just expressing their displeasure here.

I will be back to listening tomorrowSmile!!!!!
