New Schedule, No Preempts, Tributes and Highlights

by gregbell 9/30/2008 12:17:00 PM

Okay first of all, I have been told it will be unlikely that Radio Classics 164 will be preempted for sports this Saturday. Let's hope we are done with it now that baseball is in the playoffs.

Next week's schedule is up now - it is here but also can always be found by clicking the link under my photo (in the Featured Links section).

RadioClassics Oct 6th-13th, 2008 Wk PDF Version.pdf (65.00 kb)

RadioClassics Oct 6th-13th, 2008 Wk-Excel Version (21.00 kb)

As some of my listeners have noted on in their comments; singer and radio performer Connie Haines passed away at age 87 on Monday (9/29). I have a few episodes with her, namely as the featured vocalist on The Abbott and Costello Show. I'll play one next week featuring a Haines song.

Meanwhile, this week (9/29 to 10/05) be sure to check out the latest hour of Gracie for President including her visit with Fibber McGee and Molly. Speaking of the McGee's they can be heard in semi-serious roles on Lux Radio Theatre's version of "The Whole Town's Talking". Also this week, Orson Welles in the Agatha Christie story, "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" as presented on The Campbell Playhouse. And the now 91 year old, Kirk Douglas in the Suspense episode - The Butcher's Wife (written by James Poe).

Greg,

Another good schedule the week of 10/6/08. What are the chances of you playing the orginal "The War of The Worlds" with Orsen Wells? You know the one I'm talking about. The one that scared the US when it was broadcast live.

RJI,

100 percent! It is an annual tradition here to play the original 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast during Halloween. Not sure yet of the exact broadcast times, but we'll certainly have it playing the final week of this month.

Greg:
I caught the first and last parts of "The Whole Town's Talking" with Fibber McGee And Molly...As much as I enjoy them, and they did a good job here, The characters they played were just like Fibber and Molly..Down to.."Heavenly Days! or "Oh pshaw", as Fibber likes to say..Like it could have been an extended Fibber McGee and Moly episode..Also:The part at the end with Cecil B. DeMille seemed kind of forced in my opinion, especially on DeMille's part..Thanks for all you do, Greg,,

Excellent work on Radio Classics 164, and on the blog! I have been listening to 164 since I became an XM subscriber over 4 1/2 years ago, and I have been a fan of OTR since my father introduced me to these wonderful series when I was a young child. In addition to the outstanding shows, I also enjoy hearing the facts and back-stories you convey to the audience in association with each episode.

In any case, on my way home from a job interview in L.A., I caught yesterday's broadcast of the Campbell Playhouse production, "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd," and it was very well done. Of course, Orson Welles is a radio and screen legend, but in this case, he was surrounded by an excellent cast...and it made for a very tightly scripted and well delivered drama.

For those OTR fans who enjoy Orson Welles, I highly recommend making plans to catch this one. You will not be disappointed...

Very best regards,
Keith

The "Brother's Keeper"(week of 9/29) episode of Nightbeat was outstanding. Great ending!

I love The Six Shooter. Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors of all time in movies. He is just as good on radio. How did he have the time to do radio because he was pumping out movies in the 40s and 50s? Everything he did was great!

I heard Greg mention that folks sometimes have trouble with Firefox viewing this blog. Here is a tip that will fix it.
Install the Firefox plug-in IETab which you can find at addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
Then after you reboot go to gregbellblog.com
after it loads OR fails click on Tools, IETab options and click the Add button.
Then you will no longer have Firefox issues with this site. It will work on any site you have issues with firefox on. Now you won't need to load up a second browser just to come to talk about your favourite OTR!

Dick Powell is my Boyfriend!

I'm interested to hear "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" with Welles. I only just read the book this year so the dramatization is a must-hear for me. Thanks for it, budday!

John,

Thank you for offering up the link to the patch for listeners, but how about helping out the host himself. I click on it and am informed that;

IE Tab is not available for MacOSX.

So my MacBook Pro running the Leopard OS seems to be out of luck. Any suggestions?

Greg.

Greg, you do a great job! and what a job it must be. I love the mysteries, detective stories, and of course the all-time favorites Dragnet and Gunsmoke, and even "some" of the other westerns. I used to always know who-dun-it when my kids and I watched mysteries/detective shows, and would ruin it for my kids when I told them 5-10 min into the story. They started making me write it on a piece of paper and keep my mouth shut so they could guess.

I would love to hear Andy Griffith Show if at all possible.

Keep up the good work

Dee:
As far as I know, Andy Griffith never had a radio show..But some of his early comedy routines can be heard on XM 151-Laugh USA..For those who havent heard the channel, Laugh USA offers clean, family comedy bits by people such as Grffith, Bob Newhart, Jerry Clower, Bob and Ray, Bill Cosby, Stiller and Meara, Bill Dana, Don Adams and others..Also TV cuts from Laugh-In, All In The Family and the Simpsons..Very good channel..I usually switch between 151 and 164 when I listen to XM in bed at night..

Greg, Orbitcast has reported that some of the Sirius and XM channels will soon be merging. I know you probably can't say much if you do know, but do you know what will happen with the two OTR channels? I have not listened to the Sirius version, but I have heard it is pretty no frills--no host and a set lineup. That sounds awful to me, hopefully they will see the appeal of your format!
