Next Week's Schedule Is Up

by gregbell 9/23/2008 6:49:00 AM

I'll place it here but also remember you can find it by clicking the XM RadioClassics 164 Schedule link under my photo on the right (and the current week and past weeks if you need to look back). I will create it as both an Excel file and as a pdf (like it has been on the XM site from day one).

RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-29 Wk-Landscape.pdf (65.03 kb)

RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-29 Wk-Landscape.xls (20.50 kb)

Again sorry about the technical glitch at XM that caused the delay in this week's schedule (9/22 to 9/28). This just highlights why I always promote this blog on the show. I can get the schedule up on this site literally seconds after I create it. At XM it has to move through the usual process which will always take more time.

Thanks.

Greg.

Thanks Greg for all you do. It really make my nights go by faster as I am driving down the road. I really like how you rotate the programs around and hold them out a year to play them again. I would like if you could to put a list of movies that all the stars are in, if you can. I know you highlight one or two a week if you could list those on this blog it would be great. Thanks again

I got XM on a trial basis with my Saturn. I didn't find 164 until my trial ran out so I subscribed for another year. I especially like the mystery shows. Is there a plan to add 164 to XM online http://player.xmradio.com/player/2ft/index.jsp so I can listen to it inside the house?

Hey Greg,

Just wanted to say a special "thank you" for all the wonderful William Conrad segments this week... you did him proud. A particular treat was the Suspense Waxworks show... really brilliant! I'd never heard that one previously, so thanks for introducing me!

Warmest to All,
Kim

I agree Kim. The Waxworks show was great and I never heard the episode before.

Randy, they can't put 164 online due to copywrites. I wish it was online also, I would listen in my office.

Hi Greg, and community!

Well, well, well...even old dogs can change. I'm in my early 50's and this is my first ever, EVER, blog entry. I suppose some bizarre cosmic event will now occur, perhaps at CERN's new collider (ha!).

Speaking of CERN, Greg, I reeeaally don't get enough of X-1 or any or all other science fiction radio shows. Perhaps I missed it already, but I would love an X-1 marathon mixed with other sci-fi sometime.

I really enjoy your show. Even though I have been an XM subscriber since 2003, I can tell you that all I need are about ten channels!! I guess I really "waste" the others, but I can't get enough of the ones I love. I teach full time, hence the idiotic gravatar I just created. I'm the yearbook adviser at the middle school where I teach, and one of the kids got hold of MY camera, and in the spirit of the end of the year, I let this shot be taken. Now, in my own act of idiocy, here it is for the whole world. I hope that the rest of humanity doesn't suffer too much, and realizes that in these tough days, what we all need is a sense of humor and hope. That's why I "listen back" to the radio of old and keep believing the America which produced these great radio shows can rise out of the ashes of Wall Street and live again. I write and direct my students in 8th grade Language Arts monologue and radio-like scripted programming, making a real living hobby of mine an experience for them. Oh well. Too long winded for a first time blog artifact?

Perhaps I need to start my own. Suggestions anyone?

In the meantime, keep on.

Perhaps one day you can podcast some of your programming for paying customers at iTunes or something.

I will now fade to black and sign out,

Marc, AKA Elocutus of Earth

she was big in the 40,s and 50,s

Connie Haines died September 22nd at age 87 in Clearwater Beach, FL.
She was survived by two children from her first marriage, a sister,
three grandchildren, as well as her 109 year old mother, who
originally guided her professional career.

Born Yvonne Marie Antoinnette JaMais on January 20, 1921 in Savannah,
GA, she won a Charleston dance contest at age 5. Coached by her
widowed mother, she sang and danced at supper clubs in Florida, where
the family had moved after the death of her father. Successful as
"Baby Yvonne Marie" by age 10, she became a regular on the
Jacksonville NBC affiliate with her own show, "The Little Princess of
the Air." By age 14, her mother had taken her to NYC to continue her
radio career. While there she was auditioning for the William Morris
agency when Harry James heard the 17 year old singer and signed her
as his orchestra vocalist. James changed her name to "Connie Haines"
as her birth name could not fit on any marque. With the Harry James
Orchestra, her singing partner was a 23 year old Frank Sinatra.

The two singers later left the financially troubled James' orchestra
to sing with Tommy Dorsey's group, bringing them both to nation-wide
popularity. Haines continued her success on radio, becoming the
featured soloist on the program of Abbott & Costello. She also
appeared in several musical films, including Esther Williams'
"Duchess of Idaho." In the 50s, when rock & roll pushed the big band
sound off the airwaves, Haines formed a gospel quartette (with Rhonda
Fleming, Jane Russell, and Beryl Davis) which recorded and toured for
decades. In the 70s, she sang at the White House and continued with
musical appearances at clubs, theatres, and retirement centers.

Her autobiography, "Snootie Little Cutie" (named for one of her big
pop hits) was written by Richard Grudens (Celebrity Profiles
Publishing, 2000) and is available from many used book dealers on the
internet. It is very candid about her career, her religious beliefs,
(she became an ordained minister late in her career) and her abusive
first marriage.

I was saddened to learn that Connie had died. Alas I was born to late as my favourite entertainers are dying off to fast Frown. I have always enjoyed her on the Abbott & Costello show.

Where is Greg this week? Smile
