Next Week's Schedule, Preemption News and more photos

by gregbell 9/16/2008 11:14:00 AM

Here is the schedule for next week on XM 164 RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-22 Wk-Landscape.xls (27.00 kb) Among the highlights; William Conrad's two hour birthday special with "new" episodes. Also we begin our seven weeks of Gracie Allen For President Campaign I'll have a fresh hour each week of shows the 12 surviving 1940 Surprise Party Ticket campaign episodes (as well as her visit to Jack Benny and Fibber McGee & Molly).

Bad news time- I was told last night that there will be at least one more preemption (I truly hope it ceases at the end of this month). This time Radio Classics will be off from 2pm ET to 7pm ET on Saturday 9/20 (11am to 4pm PT; folks in the middle of the country please do the math Cool

Back to good stuff; here is a picture of members of the Great Gildersleeve cast kindly sent to me by listener Stu. The woman in the middle Shirley Mitchell is due to turn 89 in November. gildersleeve.pdf (198.80 kb)

And a follow up to my mother's visit to Jack Benny's hometown a few weeks ago. Phlash Phelps, 60s on 6 DJ (who sits right across the aisle from me here at XM) also visited Waukegan, Illinois recently and supplied more Benny landmark pics.

When I get time, I'll post them as pictures rather than links.

Later folks.

Hi, Greg! I still can't get the skeds unless you send them separately to me which is a pain in the --- for you. My computer doesn't recognize your RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-22 Wk-Landscape.xls but it did recognize RadioClassics_091508.pdf.

I just heard Ford's Theater version of Benny's "The Horn Blows at Midnight". I loved the movie, but the radio version was better. I hope that someday some comedian has the guts to re-make the movie in Honor of Benny. I have heard a few times as Benny be mentioned as "The Walking Man". I am sure this was a running bit then. Greg, do you have insight on this?

Now, I have it on good authority that on 10/6 Sirius and XM will merge channels. They will be taking programs from Sirius and adding them to XM. This I believe will help with the preemption’s as there will be more Bandwidth with the combination of the 2 companies. I also believe that Greg and 164 will survive this merge. Oct. 6th is a few weeks away. I am sure we can all live with this.

For Rosemary, you can download the free Mircosoft Excel Viewer at http://tiny.cc/5S1hn. Then you'll be able to open and print the schedule.

Greg & Bill -- I'm gonna cop out and play female on this one --- I've never seen tinyurl in either form and so I had and have no idea of what to do. When I called up Greg's, it asked me what the url was and I didn't know. When I called up Bill's, I got a Microsoft menu that had more choices than Column A, B AND C at a Chinese restaurant! Any help here (aimed at "BASIC COMPUTERS FOR NON-MECHANICAL FEMALE DUMMIES") appreciated! Maybe I'll try to be patient (rare for me) and wait till XM loads the schedule later tonight or tomorrow. I just don't want to miss the 2-hour WILLIAM CONRAD special!

It looks like I'm SOL -- I tried signing on XM radio via Radio Classics and I get a message about a failure of an APACHE bridge. (That didn't happen when I just tried Sirius). Then I signed on XM radio alone and it doesn't have next week's schedule. And I STILL can't get it from you --- that Tiny site you and Bill sent me asks me for the url or I get a Microsoft page that wants too much information (has too many selections from which to choose that I don't understand). I type in what you gave me (radioclassicsgrid2008-0-22 wk-landscape.xls) re: tiny and I get the same message about not being recognized. I guess I'll just have to wait! They may have this week's sked next week! I just don't want to miss any of the 2-hour William Conrad birthday special. He and Orson Welles (along with Ralph Bell and John Dehner) are among my favorites.

Really enjoyed SUSPENSE's "The Woman in Red". The year after the broadcast, Anthony Gilbert's story was made into a picture by Columbia entitled MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS with Nina Foch and Dame May Whitty. It's one of Columbia's best B's of the 40's.

Also loved the Virginia Bruce SUSPENSE with Richard Whorf and Wally Maher.

My husband and I took a little road trip today up to Waukegan from Chicago today. I did a bit of research before we left and so we were able to find the home that the Jack Benny lived in from 1909 - 1910. His family lived in various houses and apartments, but this is the only one still standing. Also, discovered that another Waukegan native son is writer Ray Bradbury. He was born there in 1920. We found a park named for him. Waukegan, the Carnegie Library and the park were inspiration for his "Green Town" in works such as Something Wicked This Way Comes, Dandelion Wine, Farewell Summer and many short stories. We saw on the playbill for the Genesee Theater that they are having a special reading of his works next month.

Greg,
What were the radio stars paid on average, prior to the advent of television?
Were the character actors paid very well?
Thank you in advance,
Dennis
