Thank you, Greg, so much for the GREAT Agnes Moorehead Tribute! She, as with so many who starred in the film "Genghis Khan," died of cancer. I wonder if anyone ever actually made the connection between the fact that these stars were together in the desert where radiation flowed freely in the air - Nevada, I believe. In addtion to Miss Moorehead, Susan Hayward, John Wayne and Dick Powell plus several members of the film crew also developed and died from cancer.
I know most people (including me) remember Miss Moorehead as Endora from "Bewitched" but I didn't care for her all that much in that role (though she was good in it). I liked her better in "Citizen Kane" and, of course, on the radio in such classics as you presented and in "Sorry, Wrong Number." She was a superb radio actress.

Right ball park on the movie, but it was called "The Conqueror". John Wayne played Genghis Khan in the movie. Quite of few of the actors and crew later died from cancer that was determined to be caused from the close proximity to a government nuclear testing site. Quite a sad thing especially considering all these actors had done their country during WWII. It was said the Howard Hughes felt so responsible for these deaths he would not allow the film to be shown after the original run. He kept all the prints locked up until finally he allowed it to be shown on TV in 1974.

There should be a Sirius XM channel devoted 100% to Johnny Dollar episodes! Smile

Thanks for the correction RE: "The Conquerer." I didn't know that about Howard Hughes. I guess he had a heart after all!
Seriously, although there may have been a connection between the nearby test site and the actors, actresses and crew gtting cancer, I also suspect -- in fact, in the cases of John Wayne and Susan Hayward, -- there were smokers in the midst and that also may have contributed to the deaths from cancer. John Wayne got lung cancer in 1964 --- in fact, he had a lung removed. But he died 15 years later of stomach cancer. Miss Hayward had what is medically called bronchogenic carcinoma - cancer that started in her lung and metastacized to her brain. Both deaths were hard and sad. Enough of Cancer 101! All gave so much to our entertainment and continue to do so long after they passed away. We're lucky to have them still.

I just sent an email to Greg Bell praising him for the wonderful information he gave today about Agnes Moorehead. I did not know so many of the facts about her.

I also love that at the end of the "Suspense," Greg told his listeners that the sound of the ax murder was made by stabbing an ice pick into a head of cabbage. What a wonderfully ghoulish image. I shuddered as I laughed out loud.

I love this radio channel -- boy has it made my daily two-hour commute more bearable.

Jann,

Yeah, a pretty gruesome sound effect, but creative. So glad you enjoyed it and by the way one of my favorite sound effects is from Lights Out where they used a a rubber glove to make the sound of a human being literally turned inside out! Yuck!

I am also happy to be along for your commute, thanks.

Greg.

Thanks for posting the picture of Agnes Moorehead. It's nice to see a picture of her with a touch of old-time glamour. Previously, I'd only seen her in "Bewitched", where her makeup was a bit over-the-top, and in "Citizen Kane" and "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte", where her characters were deliberately plain. She was a great actress.
