President's Day, Oscar Lead In and 60 years of Insurance Investigatin'

by gregbell 2/14/2009 6:52:00 PM

For convenience sake - here is the schedule for this week  (but remember you can also always get it using the link just below my photo on the right).

RC Feb. 15th, 2009-Feb. 21st, 2009 - PDF Version.pdf (64.22 kb)

RC Feb. 15th, 2009-Feb. 21st, 2009 - Excel Version (21.00 kb)

In an encore from last year I am playing the 1944 America Salutes FDR on his Birthday Special with a star-studded cast including, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante and many more.

Photos: FDR birthday celebration, Ingrid Bergman & Gary Cooper in "For Whom The Bell Tolls."

Also with the 81st Academy Awards coming up on Sunday The 22nd, we are playing quite a few Oscar winners all week highlighted by an hour-long Lux Radio Theatre version of 1943's" For Whom The Bell Tolls" which earned 9 Academy Award nominations including for Best Picture and all four acting categories. Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman reprise their big screen roles.

And not to be missed; a new Bob Bailey led Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar Marathon (The Long Shot Matter) followed by a half-hour episode with Edmond O'Brien as we celebrate the series 60th anniversary.

See ya on the radio.

Hi, All! I'm enjoying the TWO YTJD marathons, too. As Greg said this morning, Bob Bailey was, perhaps, the most loved JD portrayer --- he certainly is my favorite.
I'm looking forward to hearing "For Whom the Bell Tolls"; sadly, I'm not a great fan of Hemingway although I do love "A Farewell to Arms." I love Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman; I hope these are the stars we'll hear in this radio production.

Greg,

I'm a constant listener and appreciate your talent and selections.

I do have a suggestion that would make it easier for your audience. Please put a link on "Radio Classics Schedules" that is unchanging and always points to the current schedule (Excel for me). That way we can bookmark the URL and need not change it every week.

I especially like the "Radio Noir" detective shows such as "Boston Blackie".

Sierra Tim,

Thanks.

Have you tried using the new backup link? It might be more efficient for you.

Hi Greg... I have a question, maybe you know the answer, or maybe one of the listeners do....
There are so many wonderful character voice actors that we hear on so many different programs. I am not referring to lead actors, like Conrad, etc, but many of the ones who appear all over the place on so many shows. Anyhow, I am curious if these actors were under contract to a specific network, or if they worked as free-lance performers? I'm just wondering how much they had to fight for work. Thanks for any info anyone might have.

I LOVE this week's schedule! I was hoping there would be some Johnny Dollars for the anniversary (I noticed it on the great calendar from Radio Spirits), but a marathon AND a half-hour episode...Thanks Greg and Happy Birthday Johnny Dollar!

Greg,

Have you got any anniversary marathons planned for the scarier shows such as Dimension X, X Minus One, Escape or maybe for Ray Bradbury (August 22nd) or Arch Obler's (December 7th) birthdays?

How about a marathon themed after a common title element such as the word "death":
A Vision of Death - Suspense
Death on My Hands - Suspense
The Death Parade - Suspense
Appointment with Death - The Shadow
Death is an Art - The Shadow
The Man Who Was Death - The Shadow
Death To The Shadow - The Shadow

Hope so! ;o)

Hey Greg,

Have you got any anniversary marathons planned for the scarier shows such as Dimension X, X Minus One, Escape or for Ray Bradbury's birthday in August or Arch Obler's birthday in December?

How about a marathon of shows with a common title element such as the word "death" such as The Shadow:
Appointment with Death
Death is an Art
Carnival of Death
Death to the Shadow
The Man Who Was Death

They wouldn't all have to be from one series; you could mix and match them up.

Hope so ;o)

Radio actors were, for the most part, under contract to the networks. Occasionally, if an actor were also a producer he would contract on a per-project basis. Producers would occasionally have actors under contract, which would allow them to appear on more than one network. Even actors under contract to one network were often loaned (for a fee) to another network or syndicator.

Ray, thank you so much for your insight into the radio business of that era. I have grown to appreciate the acting ability of many of these folks so much. It was really driven home to me this week, when listening to For Whom the Bells Toll. I have never found Gary Cooper to be a very charismatic actor, but on the radio he sounds more wooden than Charlie McCarthy. I can think of so many radio actors who could have done a much better job than Cooper with that roll. On the other hand, many other film actors seem to make the transition to radio very well. I especially enjoy Cary Grant on his various radio appearances.

Hello Greg. I really enjoy Classic Radio and espcially your commentary before and after each show. I travel alot and therefore I listen alot. One question that I have from last nights broadcast, on "The Whisperer" was the voice of the man on the telephone and the man who followed the ladies shopping William Conrad? Certainly sounded like him. Just curious. Keep up the great work....and the comments.

Hans Conreid was, indeed, "George" in SORRY WRONG NUMBER. I believe Hy Averback was his employer. And, as I recall, they actually flipped roles the next time the story was broadcast. Sgt. Martin was played by John McIntire.
