I just love all things Orson Wells, especially as the Shadow! "The Shadow, calling Margo Lane..." But, is that picture with the skull and the sculpture signifying Shakespeare or Donovan's Brain? ;o) Hey Greg, I think you should take the theme song from The Third Man and use it as OTR's official theme song. That zither music is the craziest!!! Happy Birthday Orson...wishing you were still here...

I get more amazed every week with OTR.A show will come on and I intend to only listen for a few minutes and I can't switch away. Before I know it, I have listened to the end of the show.An example this week, I think it was a Whistler episode about two guys and a gal on a plane and they get stranded in the desert. It was great and I ended up catching it twice.As someone said, they had to be creative and good, they had to do shows that stirred our imagination. We see things using only our hearing.Thanks.

Hello to all. Orson Welles I think was a brillant individual. I think he was the best Shadow. I just love his Mercury Theater Shows also. I also think in my movies favorite it has to be Citizen Kane. Best Movie I wonder if anyone has the information on all the different programs he was involved with. Also the shows he starred in or played a part??

Cliff, I know there is a Jack Benny Show that Orson Welles was a guest on. There is also an audio clip of Orson Welles in conversation with H.G. Wells. Greg plays both of those every year

Hi, Gang! I'm with "the lovely" Margo Lane in that I too love all things Orson. I heard "The Hurricane" yesterday and loved it. I found "Break of Hearts" a little confusing and convoluted but that may be because I was doing several things at the same time. Thanks to the repeat sessions, I have several chances to hear it and the other Orson marathon programs. I can't wait to hear the other programs in this two-tiered marathon. Thank you SO MUCH, Greg, for paying such wonderful tribute to The King. I know Greg played "Donovan's Brain" a couple of weeks ago so he couldn't play that one again. I do hope that, for next year's Orson Fest, he'll play that. I also have another suggestion I'll mention in my next missive - I don't recall the name of the show or the episode but it was one of Orson's BEST things. And, of course, Greg has "The Count of Monte Cristo" featuring Orson which I wish he'd play again soon. I have a production featuring Robert Montgomery that is excellent but I admit I'd prefer to have the one with Orson. Orson could read the phone book and I'd swoon!

Hi, Gang! Hey, Wayne - if you're new to OTR (Old Time Radio), then you're in for treats galore! The key to the success of "The Whistler" is the ironic ending --- an ending you usually don't expect. As the show evolved, those endings got better and better. Another gem is "Suspense." It doesn't have "The Whistler" endings but the stories are, for the most part, superb. Finally, to mention a show Greg hasn't been able to get: the original "CBS Radio Mystery Theater." It's a spawn of "Inner Sanctum" and produced by the same man - Himan Brown, now 98 years young. For some reason, he won't give XM/Sirius the OK to air those shows and it's so too bad because they are about the best thing ever to air on the radio. If you're looking for voice quality, by all means, stick with the "King," Orson Welles, followed by William Cannon on "Gunsmoke" and John Dehner on almost anything plus 2 series - "Have Gun Witll Travel" and "Frontier Gentleman." I love all three of those men and I always look forward to their programs and to Greg's marathons whn their birthdays come along. As with Orson, William Cannon and John Dehner could read the phone book and I'd listen and I'd be happy.

Rosemary, you've mixed up William Conrad with Frank Cannon, the character he played on a tv show. I agree that he had a superb voice and I also look forward to figuring which character on Gunsmoke is voiced by John Dehner. As for Orson Welles, I actually prefer Bill Johnstone as the Shadow, and I don't like the Norman Corwin shows he narrated. Welles was incredibly funny guest-hosting on the Jack Benny show, especially when Jack had recovered from illness and the two of them could play off each other. John Dunning, perhaps the only person in the world to know more than Greg about the Golden Age of Radio, used to have a local show in Colorado. He did not like CBS Radio Mystery Theater but said he listened to it on his drive home. That commute was shorter than 30 minutes, so he would end up in his driveway before it was over. He said if it was engrossing, he would stay in his car. He usually was in his house before it ended. But that was the closest thing to OTR we had in the 70s and I liked it a lot more than Mr. Dunning.

John Dehner guest-starred on dozens of "Gunsmoke" episodes, usually as a belligerent bully, who always got his come-uppance from Matt Dillon. I believe that's what Rosemary refers to. Orson Wells happily helped mock himself on Jack Benny. His arrivial on the set was preceded by two snooty assistants, who repeatedly told Benny that, "Mr. Wells won't like that!" Mr. Wells was also brilliant as Harry Lime in the British- based Third Man radio series, which expertly mixes droll comedy with drama and colorful characters. It is invaluable in understanding the mores & attitudes of the 1930s and 40s.
