Greg:

Thank you for the photo of Barbara Hale, later the co-star of
TV's "Perry Mason"... as Della Street, the ideal secretary.

Whenever lists of the Best Short Stories ever written are
compiled, O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi" is always at,
or near the Top. I urge anyone who has never read it to
do so.... and feel the mind and Heart of a Great American
writer.

Hi, Gang! Nicely said, Jim in San Diego. I loved Barbara Hale as Della Street (Hey, Greg: Have you been able to get any new Perry Mason's beside the one you air each year? I hope you can - that's such a good show).
Here's a question for debate: Which is better, the radio show or the TV show of the same program? I'm thinking about "Gunsmoke" and "Have Gun Will Travel." I know "The Whistler" and "Inner Sanctum" had TV shows but I've never seen them. As for "Gunsmoke" and "Have Gun Will Travel," in both cases, I think the radio shows are better because of William Conrad for "Gunsmoke" and John Dehner for "Have Gun, Will Travel." This is not meant to be vitriolic toward James Arness (TV "Gunsmoke"" and Richard Boone (TV's "Have Gun, Will Travel"; I just prefer Messrs. Conrad and Dehner.
Oh, I did not include another favorite of mine, "Our Miss Brooks," in this question because Eve Arden played Connie Brooks in both radio and TV so I don't think it counts - although I'm sure some of the cast differed between radio and TV. I liked the fellow who played Mr. Boynton on radio (his name slipped my mind like a runaway train).
Oh, speaking of John Dehner - I heard a corker at 2 AM today - "The Dark Wall," an episode of "Escape." If you haven't heard it, then run, don't walk to the radio and listen for this episode. It was absolutely amazing. John Dehner should have gotten the radio equivalent of an Academy Award for his portrayal of the distraught husband in this episode. Oh, WOW! I admit I'm a diehard Dehner fan but I'm not exaggerating when I ay this was one of his best performances!
More later, Gang! Happy Listening and Take CARE!

Hey Greg,

Do you know if XM/Sirius has the ability to compile the total number of subscribers on any channel on an hour-by-hour basis? If so, can they do the same if the channel is temporarily not broadcasting, say for example, to provide bandwidth to another channel?

Regards,
William

I just want to say I hate when they stop broadcasting, this station is my lifeline!!!! Please i beg whoever is in charge don't start shutting down this station again for crummy old colloege football games (or whatever it was for last year)again! I don't know what happened the other day but I need my OTR!

Hi, Gang! This one is specifically for Greg for all of you as well as for me. At 930 PM yesterday, I noticed the station was off the air. Can you tell me why? I don't know how long it lasted - I would guess a minimum of 2.5 hours because when I turned my station back on shortly after midnight, all was well. This reminds me: Greg, will you please tell us, when you know, when there will be XM164 "black-outs" to accommodate college football? I don't mind the blackouts (much) as long as I know ahead of time. But turning on the radio and finding out by surprise the station has been blacked out upsets me and I'm sure everyone else. I remember last year, you let us know ahead of time and it was both very nice of you and very helpful. I'm only rooting for one team -- the U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY (who is playing Ohio State tomorrow. God must be a masochist or a sadist ... or BOTH).

Hello Greg. I don't know if you have control over this but I don't like when OTR is prempted by football. I have nothing against football fans but I am a subscriber like they are. I pay for XMRadio because I want to listen to specific kinds of radio. This station is one of the one's I want to listen to. I don't think it's right that the programming I pay for gets interrupted by programming I don't want. Aren't there enough XM stations to accomodate the football lovers and the OTR lovers? Thanks for the space to vent.

I too am very upset that OTR, the ONLY otr, is being pre-empted for football. There are countless channels dedicated to sports. I would bet any amount of money that Howard Stern, yuk, does not get pre-empted for football. When I asked that question of the Sirius "customer care", they stopped talking to me. No response to my question.
I guess they think we are just stupid sheeple.

Did you notice that after the Gunsmoke 8/20/55 episode, Greg was mentioning people that are still with us and mentioned Slim Whitman? He played a short excerpt of "Rose Marie." Maybe a little tribute to his biggest (blog) fan?

It is 50 years on Sunday, Sept.5 1959 that the last episode of Fibber McGee and Molly aired. It's turned out to be one of my favorite shows on XM. It started in 1935.

I also learned about the blackouts as well when I turned on the radio and I figured out it must be about football. Greg, Can you give us a explanation on why they can't play the collage on different stations like the NHL channels, before the season starts or baseball, after the playoffs start? Just so I can understand. Is it because XM has only so much "ROOM" so to speak?

Bill, thanks for the information about Slim Whitman, the Yodeling Cowboy. I thougth he died several years ago.

Happy Labor Day all!

Hi Gteg,

I was born in Pueblo, Colorado. What was the name of the Gunsmoke writer from Pueblo. I was born in 1928 and we had a beloved school teacher named Katherine Proudfoot. How did Chester get his name I wonder? Where are Lum and Abner. I keep waiting to hear them.

Thanks for all the fun in my old age.

Hi, I also noticed a broadcast interruption, but I don't get what it has to do with football? My XM tranceiver just said the channel was off the air, and how sad I was!
Rosemary, I was thinking about your question of radio or tv? For those of us who can only "listen" to tv, I would think the radio is always baetter because of the lack of visuals, but if you associated the voice of the character with Tv first, it might be hard to alter the imagined image. I have never seen Gun Smoke on TV, but I can't imagine Marshall Dillan as having any other voice but William Conrad.

I agree with the others regarding blockouts of OTR for football, college or pro. They get enough coverage on other radio and they're all over television! Please don't block my otr.

Hi again,
I had another thought relating to character voices. "The Shadow," was played by three different actors. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the actor most commonly heard here is Bill Jonstone, and I have to get used to each of the other "Shadows" as they appear on the show. I like each of them. Was Orson Wells the youngest of the Shadows? I don't know, but he sounds the youngest.
Just a though.
Jessi.

Hi, Gang! Make sure to hear "Nightbeat: The Football Player and the Syndicate." It's one of that series' best episodes - right up there with "Big John McMasters." What do they have in common besides being good episodes of "Night Beat"? They both have WILLIAM CONRAD as the guest-star. Speaking of the illustrious Mr. Conrad, his birthday is Sept. 27 ... Greg, I hope you're planning a special, special marathon. I'll be listening!

Oh my goodness, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard. I just heard the James Stuart, Screen Director's Playhouse, "Jackpot." It is raucusly funny.

Regarding the block out of OTR. There is only one OTR channel on satellite and football games can be picked up on tv or regular radio, but harder to get OTR. Dislike this decision and it does upset me. We get satellite to get 24 hour OTR and now I can not count on that. The merger of XM and sirius does not appear to be a good one.

Has anyone else noticed a weird coincidence on the Sherlock Holmes' broadcasts? The announcer's name is Joseph Bell which happens to be the same name as the person that Doyle used to model his Holmes character. Dr. Joseph Bell was Doyle's professor during his medical training and was struck at how much info he could derive from just looking at a person. What are the odds?

Boy howdy Greg, I can't tell you how giddy I was to hear Fred Allen on this mornings commute, and after having Bob Hope yesterday, can we have Judy Canova tomorrow and Baby Snooks for Friday mornings commute? I've always wanted to jab an ice pick through my skull. Dramas, westerns, and detective stories are so overrated, why would anyone want to listen those in the morning.

Hey Greg,
I am a huge fan of radio clasics. I have a request though. I am totally blind, and I am having trouble reading the weekly schedule that comes out with the list of programs. I use screen reading software that makes my computer talk, and I am having trouble reading the PDF files with the schedule is posted.
I was wondering if you could maybe put up a text file that has that same information? Again, I really love the channel, and OTR in general.
